Faces of Tobacco
The Skutt Center Art Gallery is hosting a "Faces of Tobacco" Exhibition
from Monday, February 18th until Wednesday, February 27th.
"Faces of Tobacco" is a traveling exhibit conducted by the Sarpy CountyTobacco Coalition in conjuction with Creighton University's new initiative to become a tobacco free campus.
Pledging Support
February is a time of year we often express our care and concern for those we hold dear. As a campus, Creighton University cares about providing a supportive culture of good health for all students, faculty and staff and contractors. Creighton is embarking on an important health initiative that provides that support—a tobacco-free campus. It is the University’s pledge to help each other with education, support programs and much more to achieve this goal.
To officially kick off this initiative, join us on Wed., Feb. 20 from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m in the Skutt Student Center, to sign a banner pledging support to the University and all who live and work on this campus on this important health issue. A display, educational materials, information and handouts will be available. This event also coincides with the Wellness Council’s noon Healthy Luncheon seminar series called “Nicotine, Tobacco and Your Health,” in Room 104 that same day.

The following message is from Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, Chair, Tobacco-Free Task Force
As President Schlegel mentioned in his last update, many activities are underway surrounding our tobacco-free initiative here on campus. You’ll start to see the theme “Tobacco Free YOU,” as we educate and provide support for this important health effort. We are launching a website at http://tobaccofree.creighton.edu/ which provides program updates, schedules for “Commit to Quit” classes, benefit information and frequently asked questions. We also will be holding briefings and providing informational updates via e-mail. You can also view the policy, which will go into effect July 1, 2008 and submit any questions you may have.

Historically, Creighton University has had great success in implementing tobacco-free initiatives. In November 2006 the Cardiac Center of Creighton University went tobacco-free and on January 1, 2008 Creighton University Medical Center also adopted this policy. Already we have more than 29 individuals enrolled in our “Commit to Quit” classes.
From President Schlegel's January 14, 2008 Update:
The strategy work group, led by Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, has made a great deal of progress toward the implementation of a tobacco-free policy. Hundreds of members of our Creighton community provided valuable insight and policy refinement via an online survey to the group prior to the holiday break.
To assist everyone in keeping informed and involved in this effort, a comprehensive communication plan is being formulated. It will include formal and informal communication, an internal educational campaign, briefings, updates at key meetings, town hall discussions and much more.
A special website will also provide updates and information. The University is providing coaching and support to help people comply with this effort, offering tobacco-cessation programs, an interactive tobacco-cessation website for students, educational events, pharmacy discounts and much more. View the policy. The Creighton University Medical Center went tobacco-free on January 1, 2008, while the Cardiac Center went tobacco-free on November 16, 2006.
