Congrats to Humboldt!
On May 6, the Humboldt City Council voted to enact a smoke-free worksite ordinance which went into effect immediately upon passage.  The law mirrors Lincoln's and Grand Island's ordinances and will cover worksites including restaurants, bars, private clubs and tobacco shops.  Humboldt is located in Richardson County in southeast Nebraska.

Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act FAQ Now Available

A FAQ (frequently asked questions) is available for the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act at: http://www.dhhs.ne.gov/tfn/NCIAA_FAQ.htm.  The FAQ
will be updated as needed.

Public Health Service (PHS) Cessation Guideline

On May 8, the U.S. Public Health Service released the 2008 Clinical Practice Guideline
Update: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. The Guideline Update provides an evidence-based blueprint for clinicians and health systems to assist patients who smoke to quit tobacco use. Copies of the Guideline and its companion materials are available at:

Camel Snus Goes on Tour
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) is test marketing Camel Snus in new metropolitan areas in May. The new markets are Atlanta,Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St.Paul,New York City, Oakland/San Francisco, and Seattle.

Maine Passes Smoke-Free Vehicle Law
In April, Maine Governor, John Baldacci, signed into law a smoke-free vehicle law that prohibits smoking in any vehicle when children under 16 are present. The new law gives Maine one of the toughest restrictions in the nation against exposing minors to secondhand smoke in vehicles. The law will take effect sometime this summer.

2006 National Youth Tobacco Survey and Key Prevalence
Indicators From 2004-2006, middle school students reported significant declines overall
in current use of any tobacco product, cigarettes, cigars, and bidis, but not in current use of smokeless tobacco, pipes, or kreteks.

No Smoking on Atlantic City Casino Floors
Beginning October 15 of thisyear, smoking will be prohibited on the gambling floor at all 11
Atlantic City, NJ, casinos. Capping a battle that lasted more than a year, the City Council voted in April to end the last major loophole to a statewide ban on smoking in public buildings that had exempted gambling halls. Patrons will still be able to light up in unstaffed

Waterpipe Smoking on a U.S. College Campus

A study in the May 2008 issueof the Journal of Adolescent Health's showed that waterpipe tobacco smoking within the past 30 days was reported by 20% of first-year university students and relative to never-users, users were more likely to perceive waterpipe tobacco smoking as less harmful than cigarette use.

Parental Perceptions about Children's Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure
The findings from a study in the March 2008 issue of Chest indicated that although the harm of smoke exposure was frequently underestimated, many parents appeared receptive to considering action to reduce their child's exposure.

Peer Tobacco Use at Historically Black Colleges & Universities
According to an article in the March 2008 issue of the Journal of the National
Medical Association, 90% of all subjects overestimated the rate of
smoking among their peers. Overestimating was associated with a greater
than 80% increase in the risk of smoking.
